Top 25 Things You Can Do With a Good Ole Paper Bag, #9

Item #9 - Paper Bag Puppet

Tell me what kid, of my age anyway, NEVER had a paper bag puppet. Sure you can go to the store and buy a puppet, but don’t you remember the time you spent with Mom making your very first puppet? Give your (grand) kids a chance to make such wonderful memories too!! After all, do remember playing with it? I don’t. But I remember MAKING it. IT was the creation, the shared experience, and when I did it with my kids, it was seeing where their imagination took them. A monster? A beautiful princess? A toad? I do remember those moments. Do you? Give them a chance in this busy world to make a memory too! Whether a paper bag or a (clean) sock puppet.

I won’t give any further instruction than above. After all, it is where their imagination takes them, with our guidance that is the most important part. Crayons, yarn - use it all!

Stay tuned for our countdown! Item #8 of the Paper Bag Countdown coming up tomorrow! Probably some things you know and hopefully some you don't. Some are light hearted, admittedly, but some, are very helpful in a pinch!

Top 25 Things You Can Do With a Good Ole Paper Bag, #10

Sorry for the dealy in posting, I was in Florida visiting my brand new Grand Daughter! 'N she's just so darn sweet...

Item #10 - Colorful Paper Bag Luminaries

Now not all that long ago, I didn’t know what a paper bag Luminary was, much less be able to spell it. (OK - I still look back to be sure from time to time - for the spelling that is.) But they sound very interesting. I hope someone reading this will have a picture they could send me of just how pretty these are, so that I could share it with everyone. Ahh, let me tell you to - sorry for getting ahead of myself.

Luminaries are little candle lanterns made from small paper bags that line a walkway or driveway. In the Southwest US, it's traditional to use brown paper bags at Christmastime, in other parts of the country, crafty people make colored luminaries to give a home a special holiday “aura”.

Now my first thought was of fire and the weather giving them a real run for their money. But here in Central New York, I have never even seen one. Although, they sure sound pretty. Guess travel will have to be added to the holiday itinerary.

Depending on your desired effect, luminaries are usually 6 inches to 2 feet apart. And as indicated they can be the SW brown or green and red colored paper lunch bags which can be purchased from most craft and paper stores and used. I haven’t seen mention of them for other holidays, but I would suppose you could use your imagination for the 4th of July and Thanksgiving. Sounds like I would stay away from them for Halloween, regardless how pretty or eerie it might make a scene. While at the store, don’t forget to purchase a votive candle and glass holder for each bag!

Place each bag as desired and put about 2 inches of sand in the bottom. Sounds safer already! Place a votive candle in a glass candle holder and push it about ½ way into the sand making sure it is secure and safely away from the bag. Then, as dusk settles, light each candle for a beautiful holiday accent.

Rumor has it that you can expect these to last for up to 4 days when they are burned for 4 hours each night.

Now lets use our heads here. Granted I have not seen them, but just thinking about it, please do not use them where if they were tipped over by the dog, they would start a fire.
That would tell me that really dry times of the year or flamable locations are out. And that wet areas would ruin the bags.
Wind... well, not tonite - OK.
I would use the long electric fire wands to light them too.

Stay tuned for our countdown! Item #9 of the Paper Bag Countdown coming up tomorrow! Probably some things you know and hopefully some you don't. Some are light hearted, admittedly, but some, are very helpful in a pinch!
