Top 25 Things You Can Do With a Good Ole Paper Bag, #3

Item #3 - Hot Dish Carrier

If you have parties or family functions where people are getting together for a good time, you will be asked to bring a dish to pass. Especially if they know you can cook! At least in this neck of the woods. Scalloped potatoes, for instance, can be messy. They are in a casserole dish, but they boiled over in the oven and the outside is sticky. To say nothing of retaining the heat, a paper bag around the casserole will save the carpet in the back seat of the car, and in addition, help keep the lid in place on the correl ware. That’s like killing THREE birds with one stone. Not that any animals were hurt in the writing of this column.
And don’t use the bag from #4, which might have #1 on it.

Top 25 Things You Can Do With a Good Ole Paper Bag, #4

Item #4 - Simple - Groceries... & Safety!

As we are coming down to the wire, I’ve realized that we have more than 25 advantages for our paper bags topic, thus there have been multiple hints in each of the listings. But that’s a good thing! Today’s is obvious, but here it is anyway - to bring your groceries home. Simple enough and taken for granted.
Now the other much more important thought for contemplation. Paper bags are safer to have around if you have little ones. Plastic bags require an extra degree of care with little children around. In the hustle and bustle of putting groceries away, bags can become strewn about or blown off a table by the ceiling fan, or just someone walking by the table. Imagine now that in the middle of this hubbub, the phone rings. Not hard to envision a baby at that crawling age, becoming interested in the bag and ending up... well, you know. I hate to even think about it. If you do use plastic bags, and they are great conveniences, please be extra careful with babies around. So much for light hearted, I know. But it needed to be said.

Top 25 Things You Can Do With a Good Ole Paper Bag, #5

Item #5 - Paper Bag Liners - for those messy places

Today’s tip may not be flattering, but it sure gives you an appreciation for what a good paper bag can do. Do you have any messy holding areas in the house? Like a bird cage? (I think that click was a lightbulb coming on, you may be way ahead of me now.) Not every one has a pet bird, but we all have boots. Whatever your need, a paper bag will keep the bottoms of cages or boot trays a lot cleaner and easier to take care of. Newspaper is OK, but too much moisture and you have a bigger mess than having used nothing. Ever pick up wet newspaper to change the boot tray liner and have it shred in your hand? Yuck! A paper bag, while holding together better, will still absorb that extra moisture and clean up afterwards easier too.

Top 25 Things You Can Do With a Good Ole Paper Bag, #6

Item #6 - Garbage Bag for the car

Simple enough and self explanatory. Obviously, you need to be careful with liquids, but you can always throw a paper towel in the bottom of the bag too, for light amounts. Works great for those napkins that always get used. And keeps them off the floor. Duro Bag also makes trash bags though and obviously they would even contain the liquid mess without loosing their bottom, but, we’re talking “in a pinch here.”

Top 25 Things You Can Do With a Good Ole Paper Bag, #7

Item #7 - Emergency Mulch

I had a tree to plant in the yard one weekend and didn’t feel like running into town to buy mulch. So what you say, well, you’re probably right. Being lazy isn’t something to brag about. But I took a few paper gabs and ran them thru the home office paper shredder. They are absorbent and would hold the water. And being below ground who would ever know. Hint: When you are lazy, make it so it doesn’t show... Tree didn’t care. That was 2 or 3 summers ago, so it didn’t hurt it.

Item #8 - Did you hear the one about how to ripen a green banana fast?

I suppose I should extend this and make it complicated, but the plain truth is, just put it in... (Come on, say with me, now...) A Brown Paper Bag overnight.

I had forgotten this one, but as luck would have it, we got an ad for Food and Family magazine in the mail this evening. And lo and behold! Just happened to notice this one and to tell the truth, I could use another one or two... :-).

Top 25 Things You Can Do With a Good Ole Paper Bag, #9

Item #9 - Paper Bag Puppet

Tell me what kid, of my age anyway, NEVER had a paper bag puppet. Sure you can go to the store and buy a puppet, but don’t you remember the time you spent with Mom making your very first puppet? Give your (grand) kids a chance to make such wonderful memories too!! After all, do remember playing with it? I don’t. But I remember MAKING it. IT was the creation, the shared experience, and when I did it with my kids, it was seeing where their imagination took them. A monster? A beautiful princess? A toad? I do remember those moments. Do you? Give them a chance in this busy world to make a memory too! Whether a paper bag or a (clean) sock puppet.

I won’t give any further instruction than above. After all, it is where their imagination takes them, with our guidance that is the most important part. Crayons, yarn - use it all!

Stay tuned for our countdown! Item #8 of the Paper Bag Countdown coming up tomorrow! Probably some things you know and hopefully some you don't. Some are light hearted, admittedly, but some, are very helpful in a pinch!
